Everyone has an opinion on birthdays. Some love them, choosing to fill weeks or the full month with huge celebrations. Others detest them, the painful memories and expectations falling short prompting a little cry sesh in place of a party. I feel like I’m somewhere in the middle of this — always excited for my birthday each year and wanting to celebrate, but also a little let down usually on the day of. Last year was an interesting one, in the middle of COVID during the summer of 2020. I managed to still have a small get together with some friends outside (extremely socially distanced, of course) but it just didn’t feel like a true celebration of me leaving my teenage years behind and entering my 20s. 

As of today, it is my 21st birthday!! I can finally (legally) drink (and perhaps a little more, but who knows). To celebrate this milestone, I wanted to put together a little playlist about birthdays no matter how you feel about them. Shake your ass at your bday party to some Rihanna, or cry in your room at 11:59 PM to some St. Vincent as you watch the date turn from your birthday to just any other day. Come celebrate with me, and hopefully celebrate yourself a little too while you’re at it.
