Elizabeth’s Story: Upcoming Artist Talks Her "Heart Song"
Elizabeth Auguste is a 27-year-old rising musician. She has always been known as a bright and curious learner by others and a genuinely adamant artist by herself. Auguste is a lover of music and singing. August has a story to tell and she aims to tell it through her voice.
From the early age of 2 years old, Auguste started singing. She grew up with two younger brothers and parents that raised her religiously, yet her childhood was surrounded with music. At school, Auguste would feel the constraints of restricted teaching methods and yearned for more knowledge and experiences. Auguste’s childhood was often filled with music; her family was very passionate about music. Her mother was a choir director for children and her father was constantly encouraging her and her brothers to play music. While she had learned to play the piano, her brothers played the violin and the viola, and her father played the guitar. It was around the age of 12 to 13 years old when she began singing everywhere.
Although her childhood was filled with music expression, her teen years were filled with family changes. Her parents got divorced and, during this time, she started to gain a deeper understanding of how much power her empathy held while she was constantly feeling over-stimulated. High school was tough because of these sudden realizations. During this time, she also wrote a lot of poetry and began dancing to help her cope with the constant changes around. At the age of 16 she had just sung in front of a small audience when a musical manager introduced himself to her; pointing out her talent and providing her with his card. It was at this point in her life when she began considering singing as a potential career.
Auguste has accomplished a fair amount in her years, from writing and publishing her own poetry book to traveling throughout the world for her music and recreationally. She has learned from her past experiences and uses the knowledge to her advantage--especially when tackling future accomplishments. Auguste has traveled throughout many cities in America such as NYC, Philly, and DC, for her music--finding hidden gems throughout the various cities. And while she has recently sung on friend’s albums, and at funerals and weddings, she is also currently co-hosting the God is Watching podcast, writing two songs a week, working towards auditioning on the Voice, and developing her own brand as a musician. “I have so much to say,” she says when asked why she invests her time into music.
However, there was a year when Auguste hit a small rut. It was an entire year when she wasn’t really listening to music. If needed, she would briefly listen to parts of a song. There was never a time in the year when she would listen to music for herself. Typically she is open to all genres and styles of music, but it was during this time in her life she felt very overwhelmed and anxious concerning music. She felt numb and it definitely took a toll on her music. It was probably during that year when she considered quitting.
Ultimately, however, she got back in her element with music--realizing that she shouldn't repress her desires. And that she needs to tell others her story. She wants people to know that it’s okay to feel tired. It’s okay to have passions, and for that passion to be art and music, over perhaps a more practical passion. She wants to be able to sing her truth and for her audience to also know that they have a story that should be shared. And so while at times Auguste may feel impatient with her field and frustrated with her passion, ultimately singing is what calls her name. She has a lot to say to her audience, and “Everyone can sing. It’s a heart’s song.”
