Bedsweater: Surfing Through Boston’s Music Scene

Since playing their debut show about a year ago in a friend’s one-bedroom apartment in Back Bay, the Boston-based surf rock band Bedsweater has swiftly broken into the local music scene. After growing up in California beach towns and bonding over surfing culture, Berklee students Cole Fishman (vocals/rhythm guitar), Teddy Stavropoulos (lead guitar/backing vocals), Liam Pachler (bass), and Quincy Bunn (drums) formed the band and quickly became a recognizable act within the Boston scene.

The California natives draw inspiration from artists such as The Beatles, Drugdealer, Babe Rainbow, Loving and King Krule. Uniquely, they are also often accompanied by saxophonist Aiden Solomons in their performances. “I usually think of [our musical style] as being a bunch of music school kids playing surfy, indie rock,” Fishman says. “We all come from pretty different [musical backgrounds], so I feel like each of us brings a different element to the sound.”

Their debut single, “Lonely Without You” — released in April — is a powerful track filled with infectious guitar solos and a bouncy, energetic, and groovy indie pop/rock vibe that’s reflected within their live shows. The song’s romantic lyrics revolve around Fishman’s adoration for his then-partner: “She was someone I had loved for a long time and I never fully told her how much she meant to me,” Fishman professes. “The song was [myself] coming to terms with it and being ready to let my guard down with her.” The track is mixed by Pachler, with Fishman describing him as the “mastermind” behind most of the song’s production.

Bedsweater has recently opened for acts such as Never Ending Fall (hosted by Breaking Sound) and Sun Room, performing at the Royale in Boston in front of 900+ people at the latter performance — their biggest show to date. Their growing fanbase can be attributed to their fun and energetic performances. “You can expect to dance [at our shows] and you should be prepared to make friends with the people around you,” Fishman says. “We have the most fun when everyone is having fun with us.”

Since their debut, the band has performed around Massachusetts, New York, and California, and has made many memories along the way. One of Fishman’s favorites includes Bunn and Stavropoulos at one of their first gigs: “We were waiting to play a set in Allston when Quincy and I spotted Teddy sitting in a plastic lawn chair,” Fishman recounts. “We snuck up behind him and kicked the back legs of the chair off and Teddy went down with [it]. For some reason, only I got smacked and Quincy got let off the hook. Not cool.”

The future of Bedsweater appears immensely bright as they prepare for their next release. “Ultimately, we want to tour as a band; that’s been a dream of mine for as long as I can remember,” Fishman says. “For right now, we are recording and releasing our music, trying to get it to as many ears as possible.”

While they are currently recording their follow-up to their debut single, the four-piece band has already accomplished so much, beginning to open for larger acts and larger crowds. However, the biggest accomplishment for the band is the strong bond between each other and the friends they’ve made along the way. “I think the greatest reward for us would be all the memories we’ve made and friendships we’ve formed from Bedsweater so far. I feel lucky to get to experience all of this with my bandmates; they’ve become family to me.

Bedsweater will be performing at Nash Bar & Stage on December 7, and you can find them on Instagram and Spotify.
