That Good Shit!: A Conversation with Annabelle Kline
From creating a few TikToks that went viral in 2020 to touring with EARTHGANG, Annabelle Kline is a force in the music industry to be reckoned with. Kline is the founder of That Good Shit, an independent music curation business. With everything she does, Kline is supporting small sounds and making a big impact.
Kline’s career took off in October 2020, after her TikToks about “what your favorite artist says about you” went viral. People in her comments started asking for her to make them playlists, and this was the point at which Kline decided to make That Good Shit – the rest was history. Since then, That Good Shit has grown into a space for playlist curation, blog posts, and live events focused on supporting underground artists. I asked Kline if she had a process to curate the perfect playlist. “When I make playlists, I always put myself in the listener’s shoes. I imagine or ask them what environment they're going to be in when listening, and I think about what I would want to listen to at that moment.” That Good Shit has over 17k followers on its Spotify account - Kline has you covered for any situation.
Aside from curating playlists, Kline also organizes shows and events to support up-and-coming musicians. In collaboration with Green Tea Studios, Kline started “Sunday Sounds,” which is a weekly show featuring rotating artists. Sunday Sounds have held shows from coast to coast – in LA where Kline grew up, and in NYC where she currently resides. “After I started That Good Shit, I knew I had to do in-person events,” she says. Kline and Green Tea Studios reach out to artists to ask if they want to take part. “Both That Good Shit and Green Tea Studios are very community-oriented, so we definitely have artists in mind.” Sunday Sounds is a great way to promote what That Good Shit stands for.
Aside from running That Good Shit, Kline is a manager for a Berklee student, Diz. Kline explained that she only works with artists that she truly enjoys listening to. “I met Diz through TikTok. When I first listened to his music, I was like ‘Holy shit, this is something so special.” Kline has also interviewed artists such as JID and Teezo Touchdown for the business. “Some of my fondest memories are connecting with artists that I have loved for years.”
Going forward, we can expect to see more from That Good Shit as Kline’s main focus is more shows based in NYC and more interviews with artists! Follow her on Instagram at @thatgoodsht and on TikTok @annabelleklinee.
