Playlist: The Moon

The overall premise for this playlist is fairly simple. All the songs on this playlist have the word “moon” in the title or prominently in the lyrics. While the idea started off like this, however as I searched the albums I noticed that a lot of songs people write about the moon, or moonlight, completely spanning genre, take on a very similar tone. Many of them are in 3⁄4 time, a waltz, or even more in swing time, and none of them have dramatic shifts in mood.  I imagined playing this playlist at night, driving down a long road in the moonlight (fairly obvious why). I think it’s interesting that even though the moon is the one thing everyone on earth has seen, we take that similarity for granted. It is very evident in music when the artist has been looking at the moon. From classics like Van Morrison’s “Moondance” to Harry Styles's new track “Canyon Moon,” I imagine this is a list to be continually added on to and improved for longer and longer moonlit drives. The destination? TBD.
