Opinion: Nick Jonas Carries the Jonas Brothers on His Back

Nick Jonas is the only reason why anybody paid any real attention to the Jonas Brothers’ comeback album Happiness Begins. Of course, there are the other brothers, Kevin and Joe, but when was the last time they released an album? 2006? Nick Jonas has a total of twenty-four hit singles and has recorded eight Billboard Hot 100 songs in the past five years (“Jealous” and “Chains” from the album Nick Jonas, which is in fact named after himself, and “Close” from the album Last Year Was Complicated to list a few). With his undeniably strong vocals and his movie-star wife, Priyanka Chopra, I think we can all agree that Nick Jonas carried Happiness Begins on his back, making it one of the most popular albums of 2019.

In every band, there is always one member that is inevitably more talented than the rest, and therefore, outshines the other bandmates. This one member rises to fame and leaves behind anybody who is unfortunate enough to have sung beside them. In Destiny’s Child, it was Beyoncé. In NSYNC, it was Justin Timberlake. In the Jonas Brothers, it’s Nick Jonas.

Although Joe Jonas does not have quite as much recognition as the solo-artist Nick Jonas, he comes in a close second. In 2015, Joe joined a new rock band— DNCE. Swaay, their debut EP, earned them a Teen Choice Award, along with an MTV Best New Artist Award. Quite frankly, I do enjoy a few songs from Swaay such as “Cake by the Ocean” and “Toothbrush,” but there is something to say about being successful through standing alone as a solo artist. Nick Jonas wrote the majority of the songs for the Jonas Brothers and continues to write his own songs, as well as songs for other musicians like Demi Lovato and Zendaya.

Nick Jonas joined The Voice as a judge for Season 18, sitting alongside legends like Blake Shelton and John Legend, and honestly, I couldn’t picture any of the other Jonas Brothers in that seat.
