POV: you’re lying on your bed, staring at the ceiling and the soft strumming of guitar fills your ears as JOBIE croons a heart wrenching melody. For four minutes you are lifted from your sphere and transported into their world. Magically melancholic.

That’s how I felt listening to “All For One.” Emerson College student JOBIE was inspired to write the song by an interaction they had with a friend. In this situation they pondered the possibility of being with that person romantically. They began to write the song in the Little Building a year ago, typing whimsical and atmospheric lyrics into their Notes app. JOBIE explains, “I was writing it and I didn’t really know what it meant. It created a picture and so I just wrote around the picture that I created.” With past relationships in mind, JOBIE began to craft a story of love and loss.

“All for One” was out of character for JOBIE. “I’m usually inspired to write songs if someone is mean to me, or somebody wrongs me,” JOBIE says, “I’m very vengeful in my songwriting.” However, in this track JOBIE did something different and did it so well. They experimented with the overall concept of how young love can be fleeting, going away with the wind, and was open and honest in a way that was very new. With an Alex G, Grouper and Field Medic vibe, “All for One” strikes a devastatingly romantic chord.

“I [tried] to look at the feeling of losing something or youth passing you by and your relationships in your youth passing you by. Not from an angry point of view but from an honest and genuine place.”

The stripped-down acoustics allow for the listener to really tune into the lyrics and their own feelings as they too look back on their own experiences.

JOBIE aimed to evoke the feeling of young love and losing it, or letting go, playing with a multitude of different imagery. They incorporated a mixture of hues, for they “feel a lot of emotions through colors because [they] have synesthesia.” In this way, the words come to life in your mind, dancing across and into your own memories and experiences in a way that feels personal and oh so real.

“All for One” is both youthful and reflective; beautifully written and sung with so much emotion and truth. It perfectly encapsulates the thoughts so many of us desire to tap into, and receives a personal 10/10 rating from me.
