Jason Korn is a 19 year old Emerson College Musical Theater freshman who has been around music as long as he could breathe. Since the release of his two indie ballad singles “Fairytales” and “voices in my head” there has been anticipation for Korn’s next release,“Jester.”

“Jester” will be the first song on Korn’s currently untitled debut album. As Korn put it “I won't say [the name], or maybe I don't even know it yet, ooooh mysterious.” But, Korn did share that his first album will be a concept album exploring the five stages of grief withJester” lying between depression and acceptance.

Korn and I sat down for a candid conversation about all things music sharing “music has always been a very, very big part of my life. It's the way I cope with things… It's really the purest way I know of expressing myself.” He then joked “when I learned how to write lyrics, that became a way of expressing myself. I think I wrote my first song in like fifth grade with the worst handwriting you have ever seen!”

Korn spoke on the inspiration behind “Jester,” saying “I wrote “Jester” in January when I was going through, like, a mental crisis… So the whole concept of Jester really revolves around mental health.” Korn went on to say “When I make music I have this whole idea. And I'd like to get it sounding exactly like it's done in my head… the demo track for [Jester] is very, very close to that of the produced version… If you play them next to each other, you'll be like, oh, yeah, that's “Jester.””

Showcasing his musical versatility, Korn discussed how “Jester” is a little different from his other singles.

“I think the music that I've put out previously, probably not like a good representation of where I want my sound to go.” He added “my ideal sound would be like, bedroom or like dream pop. And then jazz, obviously being incorporated into that, somehow.”

Korn shared “I'm trying to learn the trumpet.” He went on to talk about his love for jazz and how artists like Miles Davis and Lee Morgan shaped his music taste. He shared “I'm a big supporter of jazz music and like, Jazz Pop… So like incorporating that kind of style too, I think, like, there's just so much to expand off of and so much to think of.”

He also spoke on taking inspiration from artists such as FINNEAS, Charlie Puth, Rex Orange County and Jacob Collier, saying “The way they make music is very in-depth. It's very complex.”

So, I asked Jason what comes next for him, he laughed and candidly said “I'm still trying to figure myself out as an artist, and figure out my sound and figure out exactly what I want.” He smiled earnestly “But what I do know is, I want my music to mean something to anyone who listens to it, that they can like, latch onto it and have the story mean something personal to them.”

“Jester” is out now on all streaming platforms, and keep an eye out for Jason Korn’s debut album dropping later this year!
