Wellington-bred punk-rockers, Bakers Eddy, have just released their latest single, “On My Own”, to much acclaim. With a feature on both Spotify’s New Punk Tracks and Skatepark Punks playlists, the song emphasizes the carefree and energetic tone that defines the band.

Ciarann Babbington (lead vocals), Jamie Gordon (drums), Ian Spagnolo (bass), and Alex Spagnolo (guitar) formed Bakers Eddy as a response to their teenage friendship; in between skating and hanging out, the thirteen year-olds decided to start perhaps their most important adventure together.

“It was just a thing to do after school, and we were always with each other doing something stupid, so it was like ‘yo lets skate’ or ‘yo lets throw our self into some trees’ or ‘yo lets do band’”, they mused. As a result, the band supported Gangs of Youth, The Rubens, and Highly Suspect while still in high school.

“On My Own” embodies the principles that come with Bakers Eddy’s roots: a vivid sense of self and a rejection of societal pressures for perfection. Babbington opens the track with the confession, “I may have been a little occupied with me, myself, and I/ You’re right, you guessed it, I’m not invested.”

When asked in what context the band envisioned the song being played, they shared, “We hope anyone listening to ‘On My Own’ can take away that it's okay to be on your own, everyone has down days and that's so fine.” They added, “ Seeing all of these highlight reels on social media can be quite depressing, sometimes it's best just to switch off, put your feet up, and put some time into yourself.”

Following the band’s 2018 release of their EP I’m Not Making Good Decisions, which was produced by Tom Larkin of Shihad, Bakers Eddy has recently been signed to Ivy League Records. This is an exciting new venture for the group, who are self-described as, “more like brothers/spouses than friends.”

“Ivy being our first label we’ve ever worked with, I’d say it’s going good,” they shared. “It’s been interesting figuring out how to navigate this world.” When asked what the greatest part of this partnership has been, there was no hesitation- “Definitely the free Japanese food at the Bigsound Festival in Brisbane a few months ago.”

In addition to “On My Own”, the band released their single “Can’t Afford It” during 2019, and received heavy rotation on triple j, resulting in coverage on triple j Unearthed and a spot at the Falls Festival. With a nod from the band to anticipate new music early next year, Bakers Eddy appears to have a bright 2020 awaiting them.
